That's an interesting observation. I have seen the same thing. I'll try
your suggestion. I seem to remember reading or hearing that the focus
mechanism is not a standard helicoid arrangement, but instead uses a
synthetic cam.

I now store the lens with the distance scale at the minimum focusing
distance
and have no problem.  I theorize that the rubber like substrate of the
focusing ring has a short term memory that retains a small dip where the
focus
is set.
