I also have the BAS charts for most previous Leica glass; thus, we can get at some comparisons. However, before beginning, it's important to clarify the BAS charts; all of his tests are done at 20 LPM. The new MTF charts from Leica are done at 5 & 10 LPM ( contrast ) & 20 & 40 LPM ( sharpness ). Thus, when making a comparison, I'll be using the 20 LPM from the Leica charts. 180 f2.8 apo vs 180 f3.4! Comparing the two ( 20 LPM ), the new 180 f2.8 apo should at least equal if not outperform the apo-telyt. Given the MTF curves of the 180 f2.8 apo, it appears to set new standards in sharpness ( verrrrry high ) & contrast! 50 f1.4 vs older model. Comparing the two ( 20 LPM ); easily outperforms the older model....it should ;-)! What's of interest is it's performance at 5, 10, 20, & 40 LPM at f1.4 & f5.6. Sharpness is great at f1.4 & gets phenomenal by f5.6. Contrast is very good at f1.4 & gets awesome by f5.6. Management summary: 1.) The 180 f2.8 apo will appeal to sharpness LUGnuts & will push the limits of the very finest film. 2.) The new R-50 f1.4 is so versatile, that it's the only 50 needed in one's kit! Might a modern day HCB be using the 50f1.4 & the R8 ;-)! More good stuff from the Solms gnomes ;-)! Tom D.
