Dave,

Leica suggested that initially they were looking at a 35-70 trielmar, but
the feeling at the company was that this range suited the SLR better than
the M, where the photographer likes to get in a bit closer. They sited the
fact that on an SLR the 50 is considered the more usual choice of standard
lens, where on the M the 35 has always held sway. They went on to comment
that making the lens 28-35-50 was in fact more difficult than a 35-50-70
would have been.
