You can open the camera, but that is a little more fidgetty than usual. In fact, I bought it the very moment a saw it in the store, because I used a GMP grip on my Leica R5 for years. Th protrusion really helps to strengthen your grip. The Leica M-grip looks as it is a part of the camera.
