Hi Bud, Had both lenses, 400 & 560 and used them most of the time hand held with the Leica pistol grip and a micro switch and cord connected to the moror drive. Both great sports / action lenses with the sliding barrel. I made a big mistake of selling both when I bought the 280mm 2.8 with extenders as the 6.8's are so light and easy to hand hold that there have been times when I wish I had kept them, certainly the 400mm! If you get one I doubt you'll be sorry. One thing is to get the close focus barrel section that allows you to almost shoot macro stuff with eather lens. Another purchase suggestion. You don't have to buy both lenses complete, all you need is the front barrel section and both lens heads. Much cheaper this way. It is highly unlikely you would want to use both lenses at exactly the same time, it's so convenient to switch lens heads you really only need the one rear lens barrel. If you see a 400 mm lying around complete for a really good price, please let me know as I'd pick it up if the price was right. :) I wonder how it would look using it with an R8 matt screen? Probably a hell of a lot better in the days of the R4's ted
