This doesn't have anything to do, per se, with talent, ambition, or overall ability. It does have to do with knowing what you will need to get the pictures that you want. The answer to this question is different for everyone. A Galen Rowell or Art Wolfe might take 3 bodies and 10 lenses from a 20 to a 400 with a 2x converter... a recent copy of National Geographic Traveller had an interview with a guy (Dave Harvey) who shoots his NG assignments mostly with a Leica or two and a 28 and a 35. Why? They take different pictures. It is certainly NOT the case that you can take any picture that is available to you with just a 50. OTOH, it IS possible to take a large number of very interesting pictures with just a 50. If that's what you are after, there is no reason to bring anything else. Just MHO. Pete
