I did not discuss the chipped vulcanite problem with Don Chatterton. But actually, Don was most helpful and advised me how to inspect the glass for fogging. While he waited on the phone he advised me to get my lenses and shine a pen light through the mounting end. They were cloudy and I had never noticed this before. Don said that he thought animal fat (whale oil, I beleive he said) was used in these 50's lenses. It was then that he advised me that they had had their day. I nearly bailed out. I called a gent who advertised in SB, Bruce Pick, to see about selling them, or trading up to an M. Bruce said that they (the lenses) could be repolished and put me in touch with John Van Stelten, who incidentally, did a magnificent job repolishing them. I know that there was some recent discussion rearding Mr. Chatterton's "bedside manner." I would not hesitate, and expect that I may, do business with him again. He was courteous and most willing to share his expertise. Incidentally, the weather here is quite mild compared to the sub zero temps in the Interior of Alaska. The temp rarely dips into the single digits, and usually hovers around 32. Yes, Bob, I do realize that miissing vulcanite does not affect photo quality. I am a user, but I think such a fine insturment deserves to be kept looking like one as well. Thanks to all who have offered advise--I am not giving it up!!!
