Eric is right. There have been several reports on the Nikon list about
situations where that happened. People (even pros) were quite
disappointed. Maybe they simply expected the system to be perfect, like
the ads claim, and is not true.
And the num 4/97 of Leica Magazine (the magazine of Polyphoto, the
italian distributor of Leica) reports an interesting comparative test
between the built-in  R8 flash meter and a Minolta flashmeter, using a
Metz (don't remember which model, I can check) and a Sunpak 120J. Even
in tricky situations the response and the readings of the R8 is
equivalent to the ones of the Minolta meter.
