Group sales in this area rose by 76.1 % to DM 34.7 million, a result reflecting the improvement in delivery capabilites for the Leica R8 as well as the considerable attractiveness of the range of lenses. Overall, this sector boosted its share of Group sales by 7 percentage points to 27.5 %. Sales of the Leica M6 rangefinder camera and its lenses (the Leica M system) - the traditional alternative to the reflex system - increased by 24.1 % to DM 29.5 million. However, as a result of the enormous growth in turnover of the R system, the share of the M system in overall Group sales declined from 24.1 % to 23.3 % during the first half of the fiscal year 1997/98. Taken together, these two product areas accounted for 50.8 % of total sales; this compares with a 44 % share in the first half of fiscal year 1996/97." (read in the half-year results for Q1 and Q2 of the fiscal year 1997/98, available throught the Leica website).
