You definitely need a tripod if you lock up the mirror.  My first leica was a
3C and I didn't need a tripod, however 45 years later (now)  I am not as study
as I was.  Amazing how much better my pictures using the pod and a cable
release.  Now the film speed is 25 and not 12 as it was then.  To heck with
the good old days.
