I quote was I wrote some time ago:

"I contacted the Leica agency here (actually in Denmark), and they
warned
me for Leica R4's below serial numbers of approx. 1580000, which they
said were very problematic regarding the electronics. If one is
uncertain which model one has (before or after that number), they said
that the old model has two visible screws below the mirror. The newer
model does not have these screws."
