Times are very difficult and the crime rate has soared, especially in Mexico City. I would ask around before taking trips out of town -- and ask someone other than at the hotel. I have not been in Mexico for a year and a half, but even then, things were very rough. Crime is not aimed at foreigners, everyone seems to be a potential target. My Mexican friends are very concerned for their own safety. The aide to the new Mayor of Mexico City was mugged in a taxi on inauguration day and the speech was taken! I am not trying to alarm you, but I would be careful. I certainly would not want to drive out of town after dark. Again, conditions are worse in Mexico City by a long shot, but can be problematic anywhere. You can find the US State Department country reports and warnings on the Web, probably through Yahoo. Have fun, but take care. Steve
