Richard,

I am not sure about conditions in Acapulco, but I would be very careful in
Mexico at this point, both in general and certainly with Leica equipment.
Times are very difficult and the crime rate has soared, especially in
Mexico City. I would ask around before taking trips out of town -- and ask
someone other than at the hotel. I have not been in Mexico for a year and
a half, but even then, things were very rough. Crime is not aimed at
foreigners, everyone seems to be a potential target. My Mexican friends are
very concerned for their own safety. The aide to the new Mayor of Mexico
City was mugged in a taxi on inauguration day and the speech was taken!

I am not trying to alarm you, but I would be careful. I certainly would
not want to drive out of town after dark. Again, conditions are worse in
Mexico City by a long shot, but can be problematic anywhere. You can find
the US State Department country reports and warnings on the Web, probably
through Yahoo. Have fun, but take care.
