Nick and I were thinking a bit different things in this thread. I  
started by mentioning how to mask extra things in the view with  
other, more relevant image elements. Same business as lining up  
building sides etc. Simply a perspective thing. There you need to  
check the the lens' angle to the scene. You don't need to know  
anything about the distance or frames do this with M. In particular  
it's immaterial where you are focussed. Just hunch :).

The frameline issue is a different thing. Of course there is  
something in common: the frame is telling you what will be excluded  
from the image at the focussing distance.

But as you say it is tricky elsewhere. Liberal framing & cropping  
tight in the darkroom is of course always available. But this makes  
me wonder how those M-guys who insist on printing full frame do  
their compositions. Just experience?

Other than that being used to the clarity of a SLR screen all the  
stuff floating in the finder of the M makes me sometimes feel like a  
Terminator scanning for humans about to be canned...
