Jim Lager in vol 1 of the "Illustrated History" suggests economics: "...
the Ic was the least expensive way to own a new Leica.  Ic owners could
later submit their cameras for conversion into . ..  the IIIc."  But
you're right - working with a separate, external rangefinder and
viewfinder does seem to be a bit of a bother.
