Specialist in African and Middle Eastern history and historical archaeology. Currently residing: Evanston, Illinois, USA Family: married (3 years) to Michele; two English Cocker Spaniels Ky (11 yrs) and Phoebe (11 mos) they are great subjects when I have nothing else! Other interests: food, wine, books, dogs, Audi Quattros Photographic interests: I have been interested in photography since childhood and began with an old Argus inherited from my father. From there I progressed to a Pentax K1000, then a bunch of Nikon stuff (F2, F3) and finally the Leicas. My current work falls into two areas: Research related (mostly with Leica reflex): I take lots of pictures of artifacts, buildings, archaeological sites and documents relevant to my research on the history of trading communities on the East African coast. Travel and documentary (mostly with Leica M): Because of my work I travel extensively in Africa and the Middle East. This has provided me with great opportunities to photograph and amazing range of people and places. Kenya has been a particular specialty of mine with the greatest concentration of beauty and tragedy I have ever seen in one country. Recently resisted the temptation to venture into Somalia while doing field-work in northeast Kenya. Encounter with a young bull elephant a few months earlier satisfied my cravings for danger and excitement. In these environments the Leica has been indispensable because 1. it is so durable and 2. people don't seem to notice it (elephants do notice Leicaflexes though, I think).
