We routinely push fuji 800 to 1600 and 3200.  There is an increase in
contrast but it not like I have come to expect for B&W emulsions.  The
downside is that you may get unwanted, unfilterable color casts.  Have you
tried printing your negs with the Kodak RA-4 papers? They come in three
contrast grades.  It's a limited correction but better than nothing.
