Subject: R8 and ROM

I have a ? that the R8 users could help me with:

Will non-ROM R lenses work on the R8 and will ROM lenses
work on non-R8 R cameras ( like RE)?  If yes to both what is 
the purpose of the ROM feature on the lens?
