Subject: Aspherical Blank Molding Technology

The modern technique of blank molding of aspherical elements was developed
by Docter Optic Technologies of Wetzlar (now, WHY does that name sound so
familiar?). I believe this technique has been licensed to Leica and Zeiss.

Blank molding is just that: the elements are cast in molds constructed
with great precision on an aspherical form. The lens elements still
require polishing, of course.

I have a pair of the Docter Aspherical 10x40 BGA binoculars -- nice glasses
AND they outperform those Chicago Cubs of the birding world, the Zeiss
10x40 BGA's, which I also own.

Docter bought out the old Eisfeld plant, the Carl Zeiss Jena binocular
works, when the Zeiss entities combined upon the reunification of the
Germanies. When the owner -- the eponymous Mr Docter -- passed on, the
company was split, the binocular & riflescope division being now
independent of the rest of the concern.
