Steve, I've had MR meters do that "fluttery thing," and cleaning the battery and it's contacts has fixed it. As the battery dies, it should get weak at the end, but I don't think I've seen one get unstable and fluctuate its output. I normally replace it based on what the battery check indicates. On this subject, I've got an MR-4 meter which has suddenly developed a problem. Now, whenever I take a reading, the needle slams over to the high end of the scale. If I use the battery check button, the needle centers on the dot properly. Even if I cover the cell window, it slams over as though it sees extremely bright light. It behaves the same way with both high and low settings. Even though the battery reads correctly on the dot, I tried another battery which I know is good, with the same result. Did the meter just die? - - Paul
