If you had 3 bodies they would cut the notch in 3 different places. This way you could tell which body a shoot was made with, and if that camera had a problem it was easy to find the problem body. I always thought this was a kinda cool thing as when shooting multiple bodies it can get confusing which lens was on what body when a problem happened.
