The upper - wider - notch shows the Depth of Field at f16 for a 50mm 
lens.  The lower, much narrower notch, shows the DOF at f5.6 for a 50mm 
lens.  

This means that if the split image of an object in the viewfinder does 
not exceed the width of the upper notch that the object is then 
considered within the depth of field at f16.  

I haven't studied the question in decades, but believe that this should 
hold true for other focal length lenses.  Anyone know?
