Can the LUG in its collective wisdom recommend a Leica M- or screw-mount
lens that is as good as this Nikon optic?

I have never used the 85/2 Nikkor SLR lens, so I don't quite know what
I'm comparing to, but a month or so ago I got an old rigid 90/4 Elmar,
which people on the list had said was a pretty good lens. Mine is
uncoated, made in 1938.

At moderate to small apertures, shooting Ilford XP2, I have to say I'm
pretty impressed by it. Of course, Ilford XP2 is not the world's
highest-acutance film, but I'm pretty used to it now, having run a bit
of it through my R cameras, and it is certainly possible to see
limitations of some lenses using a loupe on the negatives. Also, I
was using relatively small apertures, but overall I would say that
this little 90/4 Elmar is doing a pretty good job. Not bad for a lens
that comfortably fits in your pocket and is very inexpensive!
