For what it is worth:

1). I just recently bought my first M6 from a LUG member, and a 35/2 lens 
from Wall St Camera. I have been very happy with both purchase experiences. 
I bought the camera to use, not collect dust! As far as collectable value 
of the hardware, I only care that it holds its value over time. I have 
owned too many things (camcorder and PC, for example) that do not wear out, 
but are technologically obsoleted within a few years (and worth zero to 
boot). I will take a simple, rugged device that holds its value anyday over 
the newest gadget on the block. I have learned this by experience, 
unfortunately!

2). has anyone built a light box or have plans for a simple one? I havent a 
clue how much a real one costs, but I'll bet I could put one together with 
a few supplies from HQ.

3). Any reccommendations on cheap viewers that I can view unmounted slides? 
Maybe take advantage of the tractor feed holes on the slides to pull them 
thru the viewer?

4). I am really enjoying the discussions of the Russian lenses!
