Greg,

You are right-on with your observation and analysis of what camera is
used for what in photojournalism.

In the daily street photography that political campaigns represent,
where there is NO control of events, distance, placement, lighting,
etc., flexibility is the key to success.... and news photographers found
early that autofocus, flash fill-in, and zooms all worked together to
get usable images.

Unfortunately, the Ms that I used to use in the 70s in my White House
work have long since been replaced by working photographers with Canon
EOS systems.

(Nice of you to note my old manual-focus Canon and the incredible
fluorite-element Canon 300mm 2.8 lens - the first and only lens I ever
saw tested that produced results called <perfect> at center and edges
from 2.8 to 22.)
