You can set any in-between setting you like that the aperture ring will physically allow. More often than not I find the desired exposure requires doing this. I treat the marked aperture settings as arbitrary points on a continuum, and since the level of available light is also a continuum that has no knowledge of or loyalty to the aperture markings on a lens, that seems to make sense. - -- Joe B.
