The lever on the left side of the M4 is the frame pre-selector switch, a
device first adopted on the DS M3 and continued thereafter. The second
flash-synch outlet is for M-type flashbulbs. The synch speed is 1/50" not
1/60". With Vivitar flashes, the PC cord is often a problem: go to your
village camera store and invest $10 or so in a 'hot shoe adapter', a device
to give your camera a hot shoe. The flash should work fine then. You can,
of course, test the flash by using the test button.
