Summicron variations:

FIRST GENERATION:

Collapsible Thread-Mount: 1953 - 1960 s/n 1051001 - 1827000 (a few 1952
lenses with s/n below 1,000,000 are known to exist)
Collapsible M: 1954 - 1957 sn 1124001 - 1548000
Rigid Thread-Mount: 1960 - 1963 sn 1717001 - 2015700
Rigid M: 1956 - 1968 sn 1333001 - 2312750 (slightly different optical
formula from collapsible and NF. A few from 1960 onwards are
        black (sn 1717001 and up)
NF/DR (all M): 1956 - 1968 sn 1333001 - 2312750 (different optical formula
        from collapsible and rigid)

SECOND GENERATION: all black, all M: 1969 - 1979 sn 2312751 - 3013600

THIRD GENERATION: all black, all M: 1980 to ? sn 3013601 & up

TWO CAVEATS:

First, serial number data is rather imprecise and lenses may exist outside
these ranges. It is not known whether there is any overlap in production
runs, though this is not likely.

Second, the current version has an inbuilt hood. I do not know if this
has been changed optically, though I believe it is the same as the 1980
lens.
