I am surprised that yours doesn't, because the references I have say that the notches were standard on the M2 and M3. Basically when the split images of a particular focusing target in the rangefinder spot are no further apart than the width of the top notch that object will be in focus if the lens (presumably a 50 mm) is set at f/16. The width of the bottom notch shows depth of field for f/5.6. I wonder if this is a feature added to M2 and M3 Leicas after they began being produced. I have found these notches to be a useful feature, but I believe they were dropped on later models (with which I haven't much experience). I wonder why.
