>APS is not a serious threat to the 35mm film format, it is a VERY serious
>threat to the 35mm point and shoot cameras manufacturers.
APS is VERY serious for mass photography (+/- 80% of the market).
Like 126, 110 or Disc, manufacturers hopes this would grow up camera selling.
APS quality is good for standard photography.
BUT APS small format is a problem for best quality photography, enlargment...
APS is excellent for security (no loading problems, no re-exposition
problems...)
APS is good for marketing: smalls cameras, easy reprints...
APS is good for photofinishing: 16/9 and panoramic is good for labo, big
priced !
APS is good for Kodak and Fuji, others must pay for the APS license.
Leica is not on the APS Road, 24x36 has a long life. The Leica market is in
the 20% of the market of pro and semi-pro.
Now APS in only color neg no bw, no slides, for many pros it's a problem.
APS advantages are not signifiant for true leica users.
(maybe easy loading if you have a leica III :-) )
In 5 years maybe a compact APS Leica (Minolta made) in place of actual
24x36 compact Leica.
