In certain instances, the illumination feature is most advantagest with 
the lens closed down - long b+w exposures in fading twilight (I 
understand John Sexton will make 7+ minute exposures) and even macro 
work (less than 30 seconds in color) at dusk.  Needless to say, a tripod 
is a must.
