Oh, that first is the REALLY nasty part about UPS:  a couple of years ago, I
had to send an $8,000 lens overseas.  UPS was all ready to take my money --
my route delivery guy warned me about the 'unique item' thing.  I called
back and asked about it and was politely told, "oh, you didn't SAY it was a
unique item -- we wouldn't have paid the claim if it had been lost or
damaged.  Please be more explicit in the future."   My knees were shaking --
I couldn't afford an $8,000 uninsured loss by any stretch of the imagination.

The USPS does insure such items.  And, yes, I've collected from the USPS on
insurance claims.  You "prove" your claim by swearing under oath that the
item was in the box.  I've never had a problem, though my only experience
was some years back and didn't involve anything optical.
