Hi Chuck,

Except for extreme situations (ie: giant or tiny prints),
the middle aperture settings seem to provide the best results in general.

As you may have noticed on this net, screw lenses can be pretty decent.
The enlarger can also  be a good way to check the sharpness of the lens 
itself since you can see more than one aperture setting easily when
you look at a negative with a grain focuser. 

But then there are always TEST CHARTS :^)

I suspect that apertures smaller than f2.8 are not used on enlarging
lenses because these are flat field lenses used in a controlled
lighting situation. Anyone else have insights on this?
