[Leica] OT - problems reading my Gmail messages with Apple Mail

This morning I changed my Google password for security reasons. Since then, while I have no problems accessing my Gmail via the Google interface, in Apple Mail the Gmail account just stays offline. I can find no way to restore it to online status. I have been poking around in Google help pages, but none of the suggestions there have worked.

I hope that some of you gurus here can help.
