Nathan,
That is some stunning scenery and an interesting way to spend Christmas
Day. You got some collection of fascinating shots there, and in
Marrakesh. It seems a great trip. I felt sorry for the shepherd and his
sheep trying to survive on that scrub beside the desert. Did you get to
ride on a camel?

Morocco is very tempting, but I never got there. Back in the 80s, when I
was a keen runner specialising in mountain races and orienteering, I
briefly considered doing the six day Marathon des Sables which had just
been announced. It's on the Sahara side of the Atlas at Ouartzazate, but
sense prevailed when I did a 20 mile run with a pack on my back. Even
without any sand, I decided - no thanks. Two friends of mine did it in
2001 and it was hell - 50C+ in early April with consequential
sleeplessness, daily sandblasting, blistered feet, dehydration (you're
allowed two IVs before disqualification) to totally dehydrated. They
were reduced to walking towards the end, but still managed to finish in
the top half of the field.

Hearing their tales of it, I was completely cured of the return of any
mad notion of doing the thing. Now at 73, I just want to get back
ambling around the city doing street photography...

Sure, it was a bit touristy but it did give us the opportunity to see a bit of Morocco outside the big city. And touristy or not, the villages were charming and the landscapes were beautiful. It was my wife who insisted on doing a day trip like this (usually, guided activities are not my cup of tea), but in retrospect I am glad we did it. A small gallery of 46 pictures is here:
