Hay and silage are different processes, silage is wrapped like this so that it can ferment before use.

    rate is fast enough that wastage is limited.   For some where the
    consumption of silage is for on farm use I see the hay rondels stacked in
    pyramids and equipment used to move the rather large bits to where the
    animals are.  Very, very rarely I see a structure protecting the hay/silage.
