The buildings are typical of those raised by empires - solid, expansive,
grounded and expensive to build, to show continuity, wealth and trust (not
unlike typical bank head offices even today). A lot of churches, too - so
my guess is that the empire's power was enforced with the active help of
the church. Fascinating.
