Water is why we are here. Our county is cut in half by one of the largest rivers in the state, fed by innumerable bogs, creeks, swamps, and branches feeding the second largest estuary in North America. 

The Pamlico/Tar River was long enough, with enough different personalities to get two names. Its Importance to early transportation and and society may be expressed in its Underground Railroad code name: The Alley. (The Underground Railroad in our coastal plain ran east/west, not north/south, following the waterways to ports on the Atlantic coast.) 

Boats are too often considered a luxury, but here, people can find all sorts of ways to get their feet and tails in the river. Some are opulent and others modest, some have intense purpose and others to idle and nap. But where there is a will…
