But that doesn't take away from the fact it is a well composed and exposed
shot of something than 90% of people would just pass by without knowing it

You may indeed, Ric, but being a bit of a bike aficionado, the closest
cross shaped one, I think, is in fact a plastic cover. It masks the fact
that it a swaged-on crankset rather than the better engineered one in
the background. That said the high end Shimano cranksets like the
Dura-Ace are light and wonderfully engineered. I have a 1980 one on my
Mercian racer and it's still as good as new.
It's like comparing a Kodak Brownie to an M3 :-)
