The hurricane story persists, but truthfully, the creator of Tabasco Sauce
did farm them then released a number of them into the wild, hoping to
bolster the fur trade in South Louisiana. Big mistake as they’ve ruined
many a levee.  One good thing, there are some good recipes . . .
