In 1974, the Houston Grand Opera premiered “The Seagull,” based on the
Anton Checkov play. The rehearsal did not go well. At one point, the
libretto called for the sound of a gunshot offstage. The stage hands did
not have a blank gun for the rehearsal, so they simulated the gunshot by
slamming a two-by-four on the stage floor. The director was not happy.

“Where’s the gunshot?” he demanded.

An apologetic stagehand replied, “We don’t have a gun.”

“Well,” the director huffed, “there certainly was a gun in Dallas!”
