   Sarah Caldwell was a legendary opera conductor of such reputation that
either TIME magazine or The New Yorker (I forget which) once described her
as music’s “steam engine.” She was conducting the orchestra for the Houston
Grand Opera’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata. She is quoted as once
having said “*If you can sell green toothpaste in this country, you can
sell opera.”*
