Brian, I wouldn’t like to intrude much here, but I’d have inserted « contradictory - human - life - surviving, or else »   between «valley " and « responsibilities ». 
Perhaps even add « to lighten up the burden of undue stress at work »?

Or to put it mildly rather than escaping anything in the world , living, I.e. having a plausible life or their own in their own (poor to my mind)  circumstances ;-)

But the shot remains terrific, I agree with you all to the nth
