   The Houston Grand Opera was producing Donizettu’s Lucia di Lammermoor.
The Chronicle assignment was to photograph a rehearsal. When I tuned in the
photos the Fine Arts editors were ecstatic. I thought their praise was a
bit of an overreaction. I was assuming the singers were locals. I went
home, opened the mail, pulled out my latest New Yorker, and read in a
profile that Beverly Sills was American’s preeminent opera singer.
