Ric,
My first flight in anything other than an airliner was in a USAF Gooney Bird, an orientation flight around 1964-65 when I was an ROTC cadet in college. Unforgettable, and in retrospect I’m surprised that the Air Force had any operational C-47s still in inventory that late.
Actually, I just googled my own question and found a post on Quora that says they were used as gunships as late as 1970 in VN, and in USAF or ANG inventory until about 1975.
