Hi Jim!  The bazooka effect is one of the disadvantages of a lens this big, so it can be more difficult to get close enough.  Fortunately this lens is said to play nicely with the 1.4x TC, which I haven't put to the test yet.

In this particular case the duck was also watching for the pond's resident Pied-billed Grebes why didn't appreciate the duck's competition for the local food supply.
