As Peirs says, they are tidal swimming pools - quickly going from shallow to swimmable.  I cannot show you the full thing as I only took my 120mm (96mm equiv), but they are usually rectangular...

Thanks Piers, I thought it might be something related to a marine 
industry. As it's swimming related, we have something similar here on 
Sandymount strand, but our tidal range is a lot smaller at 4.5 metres.
