You often see doors in between the storefronts on the old brick buildings that line the "Main Streets" of Indiana's small towns.

 

That is because most of the buildings have stores and other businesses on the first floor and apartments above them, and the doors open to a stairway to access them.

 

This one is in Waterloo, Indiana.
