Mesh routers are routers that can be configured into a mesh.
A mesh is a collection of 2 or more routers that are aware of each
other's existence and hand off data to one another. So if you have a
laptop that you turn on nearby to Router A, and it assigns you and IP
address, and you carry the laptop to be in the territory of Router B, it
can keep using the same IP address.
I don't have mesh at my house. I have isolated routers. This means that
if I am watching a video on my laptop and then carry it with me to
answer the front door, the video suffers a 2-second outage while the
laptop negotiates with the new router.
But I don't watch videos on my laptop, and if I carry it to another part
of the house I don't mind a bit having a 2-second outage.
I use Ubiquiti Unifi routers, which I think are great, but I wouldn't
recommend them to anyone who isn't an IT pro. They are pretty hard to
set up, and the manuals suck. But wow do they work well when you finally
get them set up.
They don't mesh. Future models probably will.
