I don't know if it's still around, but my favorite developer for Tri-X and
FP4 was Edwal FG-7. I used it diluted 1:15 with (distilled) water for 400
E.I. and with a 9% solution of sodium sulfite for 800 E.I. For Panatomic-X
(my favorite film) I used Rodinal 1:100 or 1:50 depending on subject
contrast range. And all my processing was by inspection. The developing
times were usually consistent, but I just enjoyed seeing that there was an
image before fixing. I noticed that developers oxidized faster in storage
when the makers switched from amber glass bottles to plastic, so by
inspecting I could compensate for the lessened strength, or mistakes in
exposure.
