[Leica] Leica M9 CCD problem

Howdy Crew,
This isn't about the M9, sort of? But all LEICA's. As I could no longer use
an M9? Even if I owned one "or 3?" Along with my 3 motor driven LEICA SLR's
as in the golden olden days OF MY CAREER!" However? All the chit chat about
this M9? A passing thought? TWO DAMN MANY TECHIE BITS!"
Well I must say I have always been a fan of LEICA!
There isn't any question the Leica camera and lenses in whatever versions as
my working tools, helped give me the ability to capture the hundreds of
thousands of photos in Canada's National Archives and the National ART
GALLERY of CANADA. I was fortunate to do so! With an odd winner thrown in by
"good luck!" :-)
How about 65 plus years or more DAY AFTER DAY with a half dozen bodies, "3
M's and 3 motor SLRS" when available in use most of that time! Lugging them
about the world on "working assignments" of all kinds! And several award
winning medical books published!.
No not on happy holidays. But real paid work where you were expected to
bring or send home the magic of your "one eyed sight" and the quickness of
your shutter finger!"
LEICA Service was impeccable! Always through the Toronto, Canada office and
service dept! Not that I required much, only on occasion. But they were
great & quick! Some times on 24 hr replacement! Aw those were the days!
So when I make negative comments about Leica and the service today? I make
them due to years of experience, in some cases before some of you were born!
Well a couple of you anyway? ;-)
Oh I dabbled with other makes, really more as "playtime learning."
But then I go back to the professional news-photog days of lugging around a
monster Speed Graphic, 24 hours a day with a big flash bulbs and reflector!
Eventually big "strobe flash!"
But when I became an independent photo operation, (my own company) I went
all Leica, eventually using 6 cameras at a time different lenses on
occasion. It depended on subject and assignment?
Why all this? I don't know, maybe a slightly different perspective when one
could buy a Leica and they worked like a dream! Without selling your home!
Compared to today and so much techie bitching?
cheers,
Dr. Ted Grant O. C.

My M9 has different FW then when it left the house... I forget which.... I
think the new one is 1.204

I BELIEVE that the newer FW checks something in the electronics to tell the
camera which cover glass is installed. Different attributes are applied
dependent on which glass is in there....

IOW, I THINK the newer FW has both old and new glass characteristics. The
camera decides which dependent on what glass is actually there.....

( if they did anything else, Leica would need to keep 2 FW versions for 2
different cameras going for all the future FW updates. Too much trouble.
Best ( cheaper, less resources, less trouble with customers) to carry both
and employ the correct one....)

I have no reason to believe that the newer FW is only used for the new
glass, and therefore, new FW= New Glass. See below.....
But new glass does indicate new FW...... if it is V1.204 or later.

If you are looking for a way to tell if the glass has been replaced, at this
point in time, there is no way to tell...... at least that has been
published....

Leica has not published FW V1.204 to the public. The current Leica M9 FW is
1.210. I just looked it up. It claims to only add FW for the 28mm f5.6
lens.
Apparently, for ALL M9 cameras. So if you were to upgrade your FW to the
most current, then you would never be able to tell which glass is in
there..... the FW would be the same.....

Back to what I said.... the FW, if upgraded, would not tell you which glass.

There is 1 way to tell...... for sure..... Ask for the buyer to show you the
repair docs on the camera. Easy, sure, cheap.

may we assume that the firmware version number is an indicator of
sensor/cover glass repair/replacement?
